Nights out in Derby: Austin Powers lookalike to DJ groovy Cavern Club-inspired event at Derby Gaol

Those who say it’s all about ‘location location location’ have an excellent point.

A brand new club night is headed for Derby and its location is something of a head-turner. 

People can dance the night away to an eclectic mix of music from the past five decades - in Derby Gaol.

It gets better...

The DJ on the night will be dressed up as Austin Powers, so you can expect a host decked out in a groovy ensemble.

The unique idea is the brainchild of intrepid events organiser Freddie from Groovy Events.

He moonlights as DJ Austin Powerz, is a quizmaster extraordinaire and DJs at venues across Derbyshire and beyond. 

Under his company Groovy Events, Freddie aims to bring Cavern Nights - a play on the venue made famous by The Beatles - to Derby.

The Cavern Club in Liverpool is one of the world’s most famous clubs thanks to the Fab Four whose phenomenal success started there.

Similar to the Cavern Club, Derby Gaol is also a tourist attraction and has an underground area too.

On the night, people can expect a ‘music selection like no other’ with chart-toppers from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s to present day.

The wide-ranging music will feature hits from Jimi Hendrix, The Kinks, The Who, plus absolute bangers from the 90s indie and club scene. 

Organiser Freddie is proud to launch his ‘unique music and location experience.’ 

The event will be on Friday April 5, 2024, with the view of more similar events to follow.

Freddie said: “It’s a quirky location with roots dating back to 1756.

“Add to that we’ll be playing alternative music, not mainstream, making the event even more unique.

“We are celebrating Derby history whilst trying to bring 60s vibes from Liverpool’s famous Cavern Club.”

Freddie has visited the Liverpool landmark around 10 times and is keen to pay homage to The Beatles springboard.

He said: “We aim to play the best music from that era, it will be a musical experience influenced by the 60s, because Derby needs something different.

“We have taken the historical location of Derby Gaol and added a unique music experience to create an event not seen anywhere else.”

The launch of Cavern Nights at Derby Jail will be on Friday April 5, 2024.

DJ Austin Powerz will be in full costume, which is pretty much all you need to have a groovy time on the night.
