Day Fever history

It was her husband Jonny Owen, a Welsh producer-actor who came up with the initial idea of the daytime disco Day Fever events.

Other people including Jon McClure, who is the lead singer of rock band Reverend and The Makers, and Chris McClure (both no relation to Vicky) got involved to create the juggernaut that is Day Fever today.

The star of hit dramas Line Of Duty and Trigger Point, spoke to BBC Radio Derby about her plans to bring Day Fever to Derby.

Day Fever daytime club in Derby?

When pushed by BBC Radio Derby presenter Becky Measures, about the lack of Derby-based Day Fever, Vicky was quick to respond.

She said: “I know, I know. We need a venue because we need people to get in touch and offer us up what they’ve got and what they think will work well for Day Fever.

“Let us know Derby, what [have] you got? Get in touch!”

Speaking about the size of a potential Derby venue, Vicky said she was ‘confident’ it would be filled.

She added: “I have no doubt about filling it. I know Derby likes a day out, so I’m sure we’ll be fine.

“It can be anything. Jonny’s going to a venue tomorrow which [houses] about 350, and we’ve had Rock City which is 1,800, so anywhere in that ballpark is good for me.”

‘Cool is out the window, cheesy is back’

Vicky said: “What I love about Day Fever is, it’s a daytime disco playing all the hits, so you can’t go in and sit down. It’s one of those places where you go to dance.

“You look out into the crowd and you see people from all walks of life, different ages.

“Cool is out the window, cheesy is back, you just let loose and have a good time!”

Reflecting on the popularity of the events, Vicky said: “They’ve sold out across the country.

“Some venues are smaller, some are bigger, so you’re filling these spaces in the day.

“And what’s amazing is you’re filling them when they wouldn’t naturally be used.

“They [nightclubs] have struggled a lot, obviously since Covid, but just in general [too].”

Day Fever ‘brings people come together’

The events offer communal space to enjoy great music, letting people let their hair down and still be home in time for Match Of The Day.

Celebrity fans include Robbie Williams who’s recent Instagram post showed his appreciation for Day Fever.

“It’s a beautiful thing to see, you see people making friends, we’ve had people going on dates on the back of it.

“Sometimes when you get to a certain age, people expect you don’t want to go out - well we do!

“And I’m 41 now, and I couldn’t think of anything worse than going out late at night, because it’s just not my vibe anymore.

“I did it good when I was younger, but now, I want to go out on a day ball.”

Can you recommend a venue in Derby where Day Fever can be held? We would love to know!
