Epic stargazing party to be held in Derby park to celebrate Astronomical Society's 50th birthday

A Derby park is hosting a Star Party where people can explore the wonders of the night sky through high-powered telescopes while learning about the mysteries of the universe.

Alvaston Park is playing host to the 50th Anniversary celebrations of Derby and District Astronomical Society on Saturday, January 20, 2023 from 4.30pm until 8.30pm.

The society was founded in 1974 and currently has 50 members who have a passion for astronomy.

And to celebrate everyone is invited to the special birthday celebrations in Alvaston.

It is a family event perfect for novices and experienced stargazers, as astronomy knowledge and tips are shared in a fun way. 

The Star Party activities are free and kickstart the 50th Anniversary celebrations of Derby and District Astronomical Society who are bringing along their telescopes to study the night’s sky.

The event welcomes back family favourites including a star walk led by Beyond the Pencil, who bring science, arts, and creativity together.

Little ones can also be kept happy with craft activities including stomp rockets, starry stories, astronomy-themed crafts, Alvaston Pirate model boat display and much more.

Refreshments are available throughout the evening at the Waterside Café, including hotdogs, jacket potatoes, hot drinks and star-themed food.

Educational and entertaining talks will give people the opportunity to learn more about the field of astronomy, whilst an outdoor projection will be a visual feast for the eyes on a cold January night.

Speaking of weather, the Met Office predicts temperatures will be around 4°C with a gentle breeze and rainfall.

The event is a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities, so visitors are advised to wrap up warm, wear appropriate footwear for outdoors and bring a torch.

Katie Smith from Alvaston Park Friends said: “We are excited to be returning again this year for our annual Stargazing event at Alvaston Park. Wrap up warm, come along and join in the fun!”

The event is a partnership between Derby City Council’s Parks Team and Alvaston Park Friends.
