I tried this Derby pub’s genius ‘mini Sunday roast’ and it was surprisingly filling

Whatever you order, make sure you get a Yorkshire pudding - they are ELITE!

I love a good Sunday carvery especially when the weather is so miserable. And I’m a firm believer that there is nothing a succulent roast can’t fix.

I’m usually guilty of having eyes bigger than my stomach when it comes to ordering food, so I like to keep an eye out for restaurants that deliver big on flavour rather than portion size.

I have dined at The Malt At Aston On Trent a number of times and one of my go-to dishes there is the mini roast.

I haven’t seen enough smaller carveries advertised anywhere else, which is why I think it is a genius idea from The Malt.

The mini roast option will attract a number of diners, especially those who have smaller appetites but who want to enjoy everything about a roast.

Secondly, the reduced price is also pocket-friendly for people dining on a budget.

A full-price Proper Plateful roast is £15.

This comes with a choice of beef, pork or turkey, plus roasties, Yorkshire pudding, cauliflower cheese, seasonal greens, buttered carrots, braised red cabbage and gravy.

The mini roast version, where you choose one meat is £9 and includes smaller portions of everything on the Proper Plateful dish, including half a Yorkshire pudding.

I love the idea of making a dish your own, and The Malt is really good at accommodating.

For example during my last visit I had a craving for a Yorkshire pudding and paid extra to have this with my vegan pie option, as it wasn’t originally included in this meal.

What I ate for mini roast Sunday carvery at The Malt Aston On Trent

After going back and forth between the turkey roast or pie, I chose the Cauliflower and Spinach Balti Pie option.

The crisp pastry case was packed with a spicy vegetable filling.

It was nice to see whole cauliflower florets inside the pie which provided texture.

I found the spice levels woke up my tastebuds as the chilli hit was discernible and made this pie next level gorgeous.

The roasties were very good, boasting a burnished exterior and light-as-a-cloud insides.

The fist sized Yorkshire pudding was amazing, while the meaty gravy made me want to lick my plate clean (I refrained... just about).

Dining partner had the beef mini roast which came with half a Yorkshire pudding balanced on top of the plate.

He found the meat to be succulent and even though the Yorkshire pudding was served as a half, because it was a decent size, he didn’t quite miss the other half.

The Malt continues to smash it out of the park, not only in the food department, but also on its customer service front too.

Warm smiles greet you as soon as you enter and Laura Bowler runs a lean, (not so) mean, awesome pub machine making The Malt one of my favourite pubs in Derby.
