People can enjoy an eclectic mix of music against the pretty backdrop of Cathedral Green in the heart of Derby city centre.

Hungry festival-goers can tuck into pizza and sip tipples from the outdoor bar, while hunkering down with a picnic blanket to enjoy an evening of free music in Derby.

The concert on Friday, June 21, 2024 is part of the Furthest From The Sea, a cultural festival celebrating music, comedy and arts.

It is the Gig On The Green’s second annual outing that will see three up-and-coming local musical acts play to a new audience.

Presented as the opening night of the Furthest From the Sea festival, audiences can enjoy four acts from 6pm till 9pm alongside other activities to reflect the feel of the wider festival.

Performing at this year’s event is Derby-raised, Malawian soul singer Nessa Tenny. Now based in Manchester, Tenny combines influence from traditional gospel music with artists such J Cole, Lianne La Havas and Emily King.

Currently becoming a regular fixture on the Manchester soul scene, Tenny returns home to present her new material and acknowledge her roots.

A pivotal part of Derby collective Year of Glad, Al Bamfs is widely considered to be Derby’s under-the-radar music prospect. With only sporadic shows over the past few years and a smattering of singles and EPs, it could be a great time to discover new music.

The woozy post-punk music contains myriad styles in a haze of minimal rhythms and chiming guitars. His music has been likened to the Durutti Column playing with New Order at a rave on a beach.

Finally, the live music line-up is completed by rock ‘n’ roll two-piece Atomic Tide, who will play classic garage punk and big anthemic indie-rock tunes. This is for fans of The White Stripes, Ty Segal and anything live, loud and riff-filled.

Opening the night and filling the gaps between sets is versatile DJ, Subrex exploring genres with effortless flow and a party vibe.

The event is working in partnership with the Museum of Making which is providing the bar. Visitors can also enjoy Letterpress posters, a photo booth and a Maker’s tent as a taster of the wider festival on Saturday.

Gig On The Green booker James Thornhill said: “This is an inspiring line-up that shows just a tiny part of the abundance of music talent we have in the city and county.

“We hope that Gig On The Green can establish itself as an essential music event every year, and introduce more people to the kind of artists that regularly perform at the region’s venues weekly.”

The Furthest from the Sea Festival is presented by Furthest from the Sea Music, Comedy & Arts with funding from Arts Council England and additional support from Derby’s Cathedral Quarter and Derby City Council.

Gig On The Green will take place on Friday June 21, from 6pm till 9pm.

Location: Cathedral Green, 5 Stuart Street, Derby DE1 2EQ
