Breathtaking live orchestra to delight visitors at Museum of Making's grand reopening

The 50-minute concert performance will feature excitable ‘party music’

Preparations are in full swing for the reopening of the Museum of Making which is set to open its doors to the public this week.

Sinfonia Viva, the Derby-based orchestra of the East Midlands, will join the celebrations to mark the reopening of the flood-hit Museum of Making with an afternoon concert of classical music.

Sinfonia Viva was due to make their debut performance at the award-winning venue in November to mark the start of a new partnership with Derby Museums. Due to flooding, the concert was moved to Derby Museum and Art Gallery in Wardwick.

Now, with the flood damage clean-up completed, Sinfonia Viva will help mark the reopening of the Museum of Making on Friday, January 26 with a 50-minute performance of Mozart Serenade No. 10 'Gran Partita' – lauded as some of the composer’s most imaginative music.

Bubbly, bouncy and full of memorable melodies, Mozart’s toe-tapping Gran Partita is thought to be written for a party or outdoor function back in the 18th century.

It will be performed by the orchestra’s wind players who will play oboes, bassoons, horns, and clarinets.

The performance includes the famous Adagio, which has been used in iconic film and television scenes from Amadeus, The West Wing, and How I Met Your Mother.

Sinfonia Viva CEO Lucy Galliard said: “After a delayed start, we are delighted to be celebrating our artistic partnership with Derby Museums by performing this wonderful programme at the Museum of Making.

“Everyone here was gutted to learn that the museum had fallen victim to Storm Babet and the whole team there has worked so hard to repair the damage caused by the flooding."

Dr Alex Rock, Director of Commercial and Operations at Derby Museums, said: “We are delighted that Sinfonia Viva are able to join us on our reopening day as part of an exciting new partnership.

“It is fitting that they will be playing this well-known piece of 18th century party music.

“We will certainly be in a celebratory mood at the museum and we look forward to people joining us.”
