Professor Michael Greaney will be reading from his new Jane Austen-themed book and talking about what makes her fiction so irresistibly re-readable

Bookworms in Derby are being invited to a special event where they can enjoy afternoon tea with a Jane Austen expert. And better still the teatime event will take place in the spectacular surrounds of one of Derby's most grandiose buildings.

The event is open to all bibliophiles, with all levels of Jane Austen knowledge (yes, loving Colin Firth's lake scene in Pride and Prejudice counts).

Derby Book Festival has added the March 2 event to its spring roster this year.

Tea with Michael Greaney: An A-Z of Jane Austen, lasts for 90 minutes and takes place in one of Derby’s grandest buildings, The Wardwick.

As Jane Austen’s most popular works (Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Persuasion) were published in the 1800s, holding an Austen themed talk, in Derby’s stunning 19th century Grade II listed building couldn’t be more apt.

Professor Michael Greaney is a Senior Lecturer in English Literature at Lancaster University who has written a book titled An A-Z Of Jane Austen.

People can listen to the expert's take on Austen while enjoying an indulgent cream tea of scones, jam and clotted cream.

His book will appeal to students, bibliophiles, and fans of Austen, or ‘Janeites’ who are loud and proud (in a genteel way of course) supporters.

The event can also be a fun way to learn more about one of the most iconic authors England has ever produced.

It aims to paint a background and provide an easy entry point to Austen’s worlds, which have enchanted readers for centuries.

Professor Greaney will explore fresh angles on familiar Austen themes, drawing attention to the tiniest linguistic detail and offering new perspectives in her work.

  • Have you ever wondered why children are so marginal in Austen’s story?
  • Who is the best matchmaker in her fiction?
  • Why are many of her female characters, but none of her heroines called Jane?

These and other burning questions will be answered by Professor Greaney at the event.

We can’t think of a better way to spend a bright and sunny afternoon taking tea in Derby, whilst immersing yourself in all things Jane Austen and the 19th century.

Tickets cost £15 which includes tea plus scone with jam and cream.

Address: The Wardwick, Derby Museums and Art Gallery, DE1 1BS
