Liam Rosenior took over as interim Derby boss after Wayne Rooney’s departure

Liam Rosenior has been sacked by Hull City in what was a surprising move by the Tigers.

They made the decision after just missing out on the Championship playoffs at the weekend and finishing seventh in the league.

Despite that being their first top half finish in the second tier since 2016, the owners clearly thought that they should have finished in the top six.

Rosenior joined Hull in November 2022, just two months after he had been told that Paul Warne was getting the permananent role at Pride Park rather than him.

He steered them clear of relegation in his first season and saw big improvements this year, but it was clearly not enough.

Hull City owner Acun Ilicali said in a club statement: “Since Liam’s arrival, we have enjoyed an open working relationship and progress has undoubtedly been made over the course of his tenure. He will always be a part of this family and I thank him for all his work.

“However, it has become evident that our visions for the future are not aligned and I feel that now is the time to make a change.”

It was Rosenior’s first permanent managerial job after he was interim boss at Derby following Wayne Rooney’s depature in the summer of 2022.

Much of Derby’s current squad can be attributed to Rosenior who was tasked with building a squad ready for League One with hardly any budget and a transfer embargo.

It is unclear where Rooney’s former assistant will go next, but it wouldn’t be a suprise to see him step right back into a new managerial job after doing a solid job at Hull.
