Viktor Johansson has been a bright spark in a poor season for Rotherham United

Derby County goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith is out of contract this summer and with Championship and Premier League clubs interested, they may have to look elsewhere for another shot stopper.

One option could come in the form of Swedish international and Rotherham United star Viktor Johansson.

He has been one of the only good performers in what has been a torrid season for the Millers who failed to survive in the Championship.

They will face a drop to League One and so the goalkeeper could look to move back into the Championship with one of the many teams that are interested.

Johansson has a £900,000 release clause in his contract and so has already attracted interest from Stoke City, Sheffield United and Leeds.

According Alan Nixon, sports reporter for the Sun, Derby have now shown interest in the Swedish goalkeeper.

Johansson may decide that he would like to play for the Rams as Paul Warne signed him for Rotherham back in 2020 and so he may want to reunite with his former boss.

The 25 year-old is under contract at Rotherham until 2025, so Derby may have to dip into their wallet if they are to sign him.

With other clubs interested it could be likely that the £900,000 release clause will be the final fee for Johansson.

Equally, the fact that the Rams are reportedly interested in Johansson does make it likely that they don’t plan on renewing Joe Wildsmith’s contract after he faced a career year winning the golden glove in League One.
