Peterborough United had the chance to keep their automatic promotion places alive last night as they faced a relegation battling Cheltenham side.

However, the Posh lost 2-0 in a game that was heralded as one of their poorest outings of the season which means they will have to earn promotion through the playoffs.

It means that, going into the final day, Derby just have to worry about what Bolton are doing as they are the only side that can pip the Rams to promotion.

A lot of criticism was fired at the Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson after the game because of his ‘weaker’ team selection.

The boss decided to rest a number of key players which could have been a big factor in their defeat.

Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph, he said: “Tonight we had to rest players, but it was an opportunity for others.

“You don’t know what’s going to happen between now and the play-offs.

“The squad is the squad and all of the players might be needed. One of two might just have taken the opportunity a little better.”

Peterborough will now find themselves in the playoff places come the end of the season, however they can help the Rams out on the final day.

They face Derby’s promotion rivals Bolton on Saturday and so if Bolton fail to win, then Derby will secure a spot in the Championship next season.

With Peterbrbough eliminated, it makes Derby’s task that little bit easier.
