Joe Wildsmith’s release was announced in Derby County’s retained over the weekend.

Joe Wildsmith’s release was announced this past weekend in Derby County’s retained list.

The goalkeeper was allegedly unhappy with the fact that Paul Warne wanted a competition for the starting role with Josh Vickers.

Derby will likely add at least one more shot stopper over the summer before the new season in the Championship.

But which keepers will Paul Warne look to bring in to replace Wildsmith.

Wes Foderingham

Foderingham is a free agent in the summer. The 33 year-old has spent this past season with Sheffield United in the Premier League. He made 30 appearances for the Blades this past year.

Foderingham will almost certainly sign for a Championship club this year as he was relegated and is now 33 so isn’t likely to develop much further.

The Rams could sign him on a solid wage and activate a competition for the starting role with Josh Vickers.

Christian Walton

Walton spent this past season at Ipswich Town but was in more of a backup role for the promoted side.

The 28 year-old still has plenty left in the tank and his ability commands a place in a Championship squad.

He is a free agent this summer and could be signed by the Rams on a fairly cheap wage.

Remi Matthews

Remi Matthews is a free agent this summer and the 30 year-old spent the past season as a backup goalkeeper at Crystal Palace.

The Englishman has previously had spells with St Johnstone, Norwich City and Bolton Wanderers.

He is of Championship level and could be added for the Rams to compete alongside Josh Vickers.

The only issue is that he has been on a Premier League wage and so could have fairly high demands.
