Former Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday man makes shock move to non-league

Former Derby attacker Chris Maguire has made a shock move to down to non-league Easleigh FC after previous spells with Portsmouth, Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday.

Chris Maguire, who was a Ram back in 2011 has made a suprise move to non-league Eastleigh.

Maguire, 34, has joined the club after being at League One Lincoln City and Scottish outfit Ayr United.

The journeyman attacker has had a very impressive career at a number of clubs including Portsmouth, Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday and played in League One as recently as 2022.

It’s a steal for the Spitfires who are looking to get out of the National League and into the EFL this season.

The former Scottish international was loaned out to Portsmouth for a large part of his time at Pride Park. He left Derby in July 2012 to Sheffield Wednesday for over £300k where he made 92 appearances scoring 18 goals.

Maguire’s most successful spell was with Sunderland where he scored 28 goals in 124 apearances over a three year span which ended in 2021.

The 34-year-old did net for the Rams on two occasions, once against Portsmouth in the Championship and once against Shrewsbury Town in the League Cup.

He joins Lee Bradbury’s side on a free transfer after he spent half a season with Ayr United.
