The 49 year-old had a lot of success as a player but his move to management is a slight suprise to many.

He spent three years at Pride Park between 2008 and 2011 where he made over 120 appearances and scored seven goals.

He also spent time at Leicester City, Crewe, Birmingham and Blackburn Rovers during his time as a player, he made almost 540 career appearances.

In a club statement, Macclesfield FC said that Savage did attract interest from other clubs in a senior role such as the Director of Football position that he was in with the Silkmen.

The club added: “This was something which the Board was not prepared to let happen and it was unanimously decided that Robbie should be given the chance to prove himself here at Macclesfield FC as he launches his coaching career with us.

“Ahead of a campaign where we simply cannot fail, Robbie will now be accountable for all First Team affairs and judged solely on results.”

The former Welsh international also has big name help in the form of ex-Liverpool and England striker Emile Heskey who has joined the coaching staff in an unspecified role which will link him to coaching a particular position.

Only time will tell to see if former Derby man Savage has what it takes to build a successful managerial career.
