He revealed whilst as a pundit during Manchester United's FA Cup game against Nottingham Forest that he would love to manage United or Everton in the future.

Speaking to Gary Lineker, he said: "Managing Manchester United or Everton is the aim, these big jobs are where you want to get to.

"But it's a process, I have got to go through the steps and get myself back on track."

The 38 year-old's recent exit from Birmingham has made him eager to get back into management as soon as possible so that he can go for the likes of the United job in a few years time.

He added: "I want to get myself back into management to make sure in the next 10 years I'm hopefully in a position to go into one of the big jobs." "I definitely want to get back into management. It was a setback what happened at Birmingham but I'm a fighter and I want to get back into it. It's about how you bounce back.

"I've had some good time to reflect and will make sure I get it right next time."

Rooney's first managerial job was at Derby County after he took over from Phillip Cocu who was sacked in November 2020.

The former England captain managed to save the Rams from relegation in the 2020/21 season, but after a 21 point deduction due to the club being in administration, he fought but couldn't keep the Rams in the Championship the season after.
