Dwight Gayle recently became a free agent after getting released by Stoke City

Derby County have shown continued interest in free agent striker Dwight Gayle as they failed to add another goalscorer in January.

The Rams are said to have made a move for the 34 year-old alongside interest from rival clubs Charlton Athletic, Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich Town.

Gayle has had a tough time since moving to Stoke City from Newcastle in July 2022. He has made 50 appearances for the Potters having just scored three goals.

A move to Pride Park would suit Gayle as it wouldn't be too far from his previous club at Stoke. Furthermore, the Rams are in need of a striker to compliment James Collins and so Gayle would get plenty of opportunity.

With some interest from other clubs, Derby may have to offer a solid wage to Gayle who would have to reject Championship interest if he was to move to Pride Park.

Previous to playing at Stoke, Gayle has had plenty of goalscoring success at Championship and Premier League level. He made 122 appearances for Newcastle with his strongest season coming in the Championship back in the 2016/17 season when he scored 23 goals.

As a 34 year-old striker, any deal for Gayle would likely be a short-term contract until the end of the season where he can try and help the Rams to League One promotion.

Paul Warne will be desperate to get a deal done for a striker as the Rams need more goalscoring depth if they are to be confident of a top two finish at the end of the season.
