As part of our mission to celebrate Derby’s food and drink scene, we caught up with a confessed “big foodie” Rory Hay whose sweet spots include digital marketing and a good old Sunday roast.

Rory is a digital marketing apprentice at Derby-based PR agency Nielsen McAllister.

Rory’s passion “for all things digital” sees him work on social media campaigns, website content, and more.

But outside of his 9-5, Rory loves nothing more than savouring good food and drink.

He said: “I am a big foodie, and there’s nothing more I enjoy than unwinding on a Sunday afternoon with a wholesome Sunday roast with family and friends.

The Exeter Arms, Derby

The Exeter Arms, located in the heart of Derby Centre is a cosy pub that come every Sunday, is one of the best places to be, according to Rory.

Rory said: “This pub offers a wholesome Sunday lunch, filling the pub with fragrant cooking scents of freshly roasted meats and crispy roast potatoes.

“Their famous Sunday lunch - prices start from £15.95 per person - includes succulent roast beef, tender lamb, and juicy chicken, all served with fluffy Yorkshire puddings and seasonal vegetables.

He rates The White Swan for its chilled out ambiance and ace customer service.

Rory said: “This pub is all about laid-back vibes and wholesome food.

“They have a buffet-style setup full of perfect roast potatoes, crispy Yorkshire puddings and heaps of vegetables to tuck into.

“Whether you're a meat lover or prefer vegetarian options, they've something to satisfy everyone.

“The fabulous staff are very welcoming which creates a lovely welcoming atmosphere perfect for families.

Rory has high praise for the pub that is a 7-minute walk away from Derby city centre.

He said: “The Bell and Castle serves up the best Sunday lunch in Derby that is nothing short of perfection.

“They've got all the classics - roast beef, turkey, chicken, and flavoursome veggie options.

“They come piled high with crispy potatoes and veggies, plus gravy for just £12.95.

“It's completely homemade and the mashed potato is to die for. 

“The vibe is cosy, the staff are friendly and it's the perfect spot to unwind with friends and family on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
