Hide AdIt can sometimes feel surreal that a serene spot is so close to a bustling city centre.
Melbourne Hall comprises a historic house and garden whose aesthetic is similar to the chief gardener of King Louis XIV of France.
Although the gardens and hall aren’t currently open to the public, the vast area near the lake and nearby fields are accessible - and free.
Melbourne Hall is therefore popular in all seasons, with dog walkers, hikers and nature-hunters.

Hide AdDucks, swans and a few more varieties of birds can often be seen waddling around the ground, so you can either feed them nearby, or toss breadcrumbs in the lake, which are usually hoovered up pronto by swooping birds.
If you visit when the sun is high, it casts rays on the lake like nature’s very own spotlight, giving the impression of swathes of shimmering water.
